Perhaps it’s not possible to recapture the warmth and congenial spirit that prevailed among those gathered at the home of Ann and Ken Hankins a week ago today, but imagine adding to what were already memorable moments a glorious voice singing “O Holy Night.” As the words cradled the guests in their message of hope and peace, the world felt safe from all harm.
Mezzo soprano Susan Graham has graced the stage of every major opera house in the world. A week ago today, she graced the Hankins living room, adding her humor and world-class voice to a delightful evening.
Guests were also treated to Doug Montgomery’s expertise at the piano. A consummate performer, Montgomery encouraged the Hankins’ sons, Tripp and Porter, in singing a selection of their choice. As those know who have attended a Montgomery concert or heard him in the piano bar at Vanessie in Santa Fe, he can play almost anything from a wide ranging repertoire — classical, pop, Broadway, jazz and on and on — at a moment’s notice, charming any audience. He was in town to accompany Graham in her free performance, sponsored by Midland Opera Theater, the following evening.
